Nicole Ari Parker is an American stage and television actor who was famous for her portrayal as the spirited lawyer Teri Joseph on the Showtime series Soul Food. Following her marriage, she is also known as Nikki Kodjoe. Her talent for acting was evident from childhood. An Maryland high-school contest awarded her the top actress prize. Her education was at an boarding school in London between the ages of 7 and 9 years. Then, the family moved from London in Toronto, Canada. Contractor had a great academic career in Toronto in addition to her training as the ballerina. She was a student at an Etobicoke School of the Arts, a specialized public arts high school, where she did not only dance but studied theater as well. At 16, after nearly 10 years of dancing Contractor decided to take up acting as a profession. When she graduated from high school, Contractor accepted a scholarship at The University of Toronto to pursue a dual major in sociology and psychology. Additionally, she earned a master's degree in Theater. Following a semester at the University, Contractor went to an audition on a call-to-action basis for the play Pericles at the prestigious famous, world-class Stratford Shakespeare Festival [Ontario, Canada and landed the lead role. After two weeks of performances, she got glowing reviews. The play was deemed the best production in Canada by reviewers. Contractor accepted the offer to take part in Stratford's Conservatory course. The Conservatory has only 8 men and four females are admitted for the 20-week course in classical theater. She was scheduled to perform in the following play-season was confirmed and she got the part in Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
